Prevail can be used to effectively remove protozoa and their oocysts from hard non-porous environmental surfaces as part of your infection prevention program.

Infection control and biosecurity guidelines indicate that current cleaning and disinfection practices can minimize transmission of protozoa providing that care is taken to prevent contact with contaminated feces. One of the most important ways to reduce environmental contamination is by mechanical cleaning to physically remove as many oocysts as possible.  Additionally, good hand hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment is also helpful when working with animals that may be shedding protozoa in their feces.

The oocysts of some parasites are very resistant to disinfection and will persist in the environment for a very long time. Examples of these are roundworms and coccidia. Other parasites, such as Giardia are quite fragile in the environment and are easily destroyed by most disinfectants as well as by drying.  However, at present, Health Canada-registered disinfectants with protozoa or single cell claims are associated with water treatment and not intended for use as an environmental surface disinfectant.

While Prevail does not carry any efficacy claims against protozoa, we are aware of anecdotal evidence where facilities have successfully managed outbreaks of protozoa using Prevail by focusing on cleaning and physical removal of the oocysts.  The powerful detergents in Prevail will help to remove the oocysts from surfaces.  To minimize transmitting protozoa or their oocysts to previously cleaned surfaces we do not recommend the use of high-pressure spray applications.

It is important that you do not add other products like bleach or fragrances when you are using Prevail. The chemistry behind Prevail, Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide^®, was formulated to be a potent germicide and effective cleaner. No other products are needed and mixing chemicals can be potentially dangerous. Remember that Prevail products have excellent detergents – there is no reason to add additional cleaning products or fragrances to Prevail. The smell of clean is no smell at all.

Hydrogen peroxide has long been known to have antimicrobial properties, but by itself, is not effective as a surface disinfectant. Hydrogen peroxide is naturally unstable, and will rapidly break down to water and oxygen when applied to a surface.

AHP harnesses the pathogen-killing power of hydrogen peroxide, but contains other commonly-used safe ingredients to result in a solution that is highly effective against pathogens, yet non-hazardous to animals, users, and the environment. While commercially-available hydrogen peroxide is most often sold as a 3% solution, AHP contains a maximum of 0.5% hydrogen peroxide at in-use concentrations, just 1/6^th of the brown bottle solution found in most pharmacies. AHP contains surfactants (detergents), which allow it to clean and disinfect at the same time, remaining highly effective in the presence of dirt and debris. It also contains other safe ingredients to stabilize the solution and improve surface coverage, resulting in its long shelf life and superior product performance.

Yes, significant research and testing have been conducted to prove the safety of Prevail.

Prevail Disinfectants contain low levels of hydrogen peroxide and commonly used, safe ingredients such as surfactants, stabilizing agents, and wetting agents. When used as directed, Prevail has been proven to be non-toxic (acute oral, dermal and respiratory), non-irritating to eyes, non-corrosive to skin and non-skin sensitising.

In accordance with the SDS (Safety Data Sheet), in-use concentrations of Prevail Disinfectants do not carry any hazard statements or hazard pictograms, and do not require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling the product. We do still recommend the use of gloves as a general practice when disinfecting, to help minimize the risk of disease transmission.

Further, in support of the extensive toxicity testing that has been conducted on the Prevail formulations, there are no known toxicological effects with regard to chronic toxicity, carcinogenic or mutagenic effects, or reproductive toxicity.

In accordance with the SDSs (Safety Data Sheets), Prevail Disinfectants (including Ready-to-Use, Wipes and diluted concentrate) do not carry any hazard statements or hazard pictograms, and do not require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when using the product. When handling undiluted Prevail Concentrate (for instance, if you are diluting manually), gloves should be worn.

Prevail is non-toxic and non-irritating when used as directed. The only active ingredient is low levels of hydrogen peroxide, which evaporates into oxygen and water post use. As with other liquids, if the user directly inhales sprayed, aerosolized solution, discomfort and coughing may result.

Try not to spray and breathe in the aerosol in an enclosed area like a kennel. Spray and walk away. You may also use a foaming applicator, such as our recommended trigger sprayer/foamer, which limits aerosolization of the solution.

If you have recently switched to Prevail from a different disinfectant, you may notice a musty odor. That smell is like a result of Prevail removing residue that has built up on the surface over time. This is especially true if the last product that you used was a quaternary ammonium based disinfectant – known as a QUAT. After a few cleanings, Prevail will lift and remove the old residue and there will no longer be a smell.

A smell can also occur when using certain low-cost gloves. Hydrogen peroxide in Prevail reacts with sulphur powder that is left on some gloves after manufacturing. The smell is harmless – you can just keep using the gloves with the smell, rinse the gloves with water before using Prevail or switch to a different kind of glove.

Prevail is compatible with a wide range of commonly-used materials, including stainless steel, laminate, porcelain, ceramics, high & low density plastics, resins and silicon rubber, among others. Prevail is ideal for use on a variety of hard, non-porous surfaces, including:

The streaking you may observe, particularly on surfaces such as clear plastics or glass, is caused by the commonly used, safe detergents in Prevail Disinfectants. The active ingredient in Prevail is hydrogen peroxide. Once Prevail dries on a surface, the hydrogen peroxide evaporates into oxygen and water, leaving no active ingredient behind on the surface. What is left behind and possibly leaving streaks are the detergents, similar to household dish soap. If desired, wipe the surface with a damp, clean cloth after the contact time is met. This will help remove any remaining detergents on certain surfaces and equipment.

In most cases, you do not need to rinse surfaces that have been cleaned and disinfected with Prevail. However, you may occasionally see a white streaky residue on some surfaces after using Prevail. Or, sometimes the floor may feel sticky after mopping. If this occurs, the streaks and stickiness can be removed by rinsing the surface with water and drying with a clean damp cloth. It is essential to allow for the required contact time before rinsing.

No, Prevail should not be used in the laundry. Prevail is registered for use on hard, non-porous surfaces. Therefore, Prevail is not formulated for laundry use and should not be applied in your laundry machines.

When refilling spray bottles with Prevail RTU or diluted Prevail Concentrate, ensure the bottle is emptied, rinsed and dried prior to refilling with new solution to make certain the disinfectant is effective every time. Remember also to place on a workplace label and write the expiration date on any new bottles, for easy identification.

Prevail should be stored away from direct sunlight and properly labelled.

When storing Prevail in your facility, remember to keep the container tightly closed and in a dry location. Make sure the product is stored in an area that is out of direct sunlight, as well as away from heat and ignition sources. Also, avoid storage at elevated temperatures.

As with any disinfectant, there is no guarantee that the product will remain effective against pathogens past its expiry date. Therefore, we do not recommend using expired AHP disinfectants. Please follow the disposal instructions below.

AHP™ Disinfectant Ready-to-Use Liquid:

1. Turn the water on.
2. While the water is running, slowly pour the liquid down the drain.
3. Once the container is empty, leave the water running for an additional 30 seconds.

AHP™ Disinfectant Wipes: AHP Wipes can be discarded in the garbage.

AHP™ Disinfectant Concentrate: Please follow the disposal instructions below depending on your format size.

For smaller quantities(< 5 gallons/litres).

1. Dilute the remaining product at a 1:10 ratio.
2. Pour the diluted product slowly down the drain with cold running water.
3. Leave the water running for an additional 1-2 minutes after the container is empty.

For larger quantities (> 5 gallons/litres).
